About Badrinath Temple
Badrinath Temple (3,133m) is one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Badrinarayan). Located between the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, it is the most sacred of the four Char Dhams.
History & Significance
The temple is believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 9th century. The black stone idol of Lord Badrinarayan is considered one of the 8 swayam vyakta kshetras (self-manifested idols) of Vishnu.
According to legend, Lord Vishnu meditated here for thousands of years. Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree (berry tree) to shelter him from the harsh sun.
